I completely agree with your two points:

1. Review data on engagement, retention and growth
2. Listen for a unique insight that explains this

but would add a third

3. Delay judgement on why this won’t work/won’t scale. This is the hardest one for an experienced investor with lots of pattern recognition because by definition unique insights haven’t been seen before.
